‘Ward of the State, Man of Bronze’
Irish, French and Indian: Jim Thorpe on Film and in Memory
© 2018 James LaFond
JAN/6/18
There isn’t a better example of a mixed-race Native-European American in modern times than Jim Thorpe. His story covers native assimilation at the Carlisle Industrial School for Boys, the co-opting and enslavement of heroic masculine rites by the machine state, which uses the sports hero as a psychological salve for the suppressed slave mind of the masses. If Jim had been borne 100 years earlier under the same racial conditions, he would not only have been typical of an Ohio Country Indian, but he would have fought under Blue Jacket, Tecumseh or his ancestor Black Hawk, or, had perhaps surpassed one of these men as a war leader.

What an athlete! If he'd come along a couple thousand years earlier, they'd call him Achilles or Perseus, and we'd still be reading poems about him. It would have been amazing to see what he could do with modern training, techniques, and equipment. As it is, the only guys challenging him at the very pinnacle of all-around physical ability are Jim Brown and Bo Jackson.
