Why the other day I was walking out of a Wal-Mart pushing a shopping cart with a microwave oven in it when I was stopped by a loss prevention employee who demanded to see my receipt.

All this time I thought I was supposed to be immune from such suspicion on account of being an old white man. A member of the patriarchy. This isn’t supposed to happen in a racist, sexist, homophobic, greedy and imperialist country like America! I suppose I should have assumed victim status and vociferously demanded my white privilege be acknowledged and respected.

Instead I cooperated completely, produced my receipt for the microwave and was quickly allowed to go on my way. Was I stopped because I unwittingly fit a behavioral profile for a shoplifter?

Was this a pro forma approach made on someone the loss prevention personnel really didn’t think would give them any trouble?

They couldn’t have believed I was much of a hard core booster since the person dispatched to confront me was a chubby blonde female at least a foot shorter than me. I must confess that I was amused rather than traumatized by the incident. I suppose such a reaction must make me incapable of understanding the plight of non-white minorities in this oppressive, racist country.

Jeremy, I was being interviewed by a young black fellow tonight who asked my thoughts on white privilege [something he’s suspicious of]. Before I paraphrase my answer, let me note that Moore is wrong. It is not White Male Privilege, but White Privilege.
