BALTIMORE

City police said they are looking for a 31-year-old blind man who has been charged with killing his 5-month-old son using his guide stick.

Medics were called at 4 a.m. Friday to a home in the 1600 block of North Smallwood Street for a report of an unconscious baby.

The baby was taken to Shock Trauma and pronounced dead. He was identified as Emmanuel Johnson, born on Dec. 26.

The child's father, Perry Nelson-Johnson, told police the baby rolled off the bed and banged his head and that the baby appeared to be fine until right before they called for a medic, police said.

Investigators noticed the child had apparent old and new injuries over his body, police said. An autopsy was completed, and it revealed severe head trauma. The injuries were not consistent with a fall and the evidence at the scene, police said.

The case was ruled a homicide by multiple blunt force trauma to the head, police said.

Police believe Nelson-Johnson used a blunt object to inflict the injuries on Emmanuel. Nelson-Johnson is blind and uses a guide stick to navigate, and investigators believe that was the weapon used on the child, police said.
